Newport News-Times Policies

Several of Don Q website's unpublished letters to the Newport News-Times are highly critical of the bi-weekly News-Times which, as the major source of community news for a geographically large rural area, devotes a disproportional amount of coverage to feature stories about mundane business matters. The minimal space devoted to non-commercial interests, news, sports, community events has decreased radically in recent years. The paper's coverage of local arts and performing arts is definitely the strong point of the publication.

Not much criticism of this "local paper's" policies can be found on its own pages. There is a strict News-Times rule that no letters critical of local businesses are allowed - and that, of course, includes criticism of the News-Times. The paper is now locally owned by Lee Enterprises of Davenport, Iowa, since it was purchased from Disney,Inc.. Before that, the local owner was Capital Cities-ABC. As a result of the pro-business bias, there is only very dilute OP-ED in Lincoln County,Oregon.
